News, big and small, tend to be fairly slow-going in a thoughtful activity such as canine breeding. We will nevertheless place here the interesting tidbits we feel you might like to know about, from time to time, regarding Maple Myst or breeding in general.
The Pokemon crew is levelling up quickly!
Our very own Pokémon team has arrived - six tiny pups ready to steal hearts, make their escape, and chew everything in sight!
Meet our newest recruits: Eevee, Palkia, Zorua, Gengar, Pikachu, and Wooloo. Since their arrival, each is levelling up fast with cuddles, naps, and plenty of trips to the milk bar! Stay tuned as we train them up and evolve them into the best companions ever!
(All pups will be placed with families currently on our waiting list)
Our Pokémon-themed litter arrived on October 21st!
After a day of watching and waiting, Kelkka power-whelped 6 beautiful babies last evening, delivering them all in just over 2 hours. So in keeping with the "Gotta Catch 'Em All" evening, we decided to go with a Pokemon theme for this litter.
Momma Kelkka is doing extremely well, and I can't say how balanced and wonderful this girl is! A huge thank you to April for letting Kivi be part of my breeding program, and to Pattie for letting Kelkka come to MapleMyst for her litter.
We are thrilled to announce that Kelkka and Kivi are expecting young'uns in the coming week. Both Kelkka and Kivi are co-owned by MapleMyst and we are very excited about this pairing, with 2 beautiful representatives of the Finnish Lapphund breed.
Kelkka is MBIS MBISS CAN GCHS AM CH MapleMyst's Sledding Under A Pine Sky.
Kivi is BIS MultiPlacing GCh Ember Pine and Maple Trails.
Both parents are fully health tested.
Pups will be born at MapleMyst and will go to homes on our waiting list.
Miso and Sampson, 2 black and tan boys, born 7 weeks apart, show how important and formative those early weeks are!
Raising pups can appear simple from the outside, looking in. Girl meets boy, a few playdates, and 2 months later, a happy bundle of pups arrives! But much goes into their first 8-10 weeks to prepare the pups for life with their new families. From the early days, pups are monitored to make sure that they are gaining weight and getting equal time at the milk bar, something that is all the more important with bigger litters. Pups are kept toasty warm with MommaDog keeping a close eye on her charges. Their pen is changed out and they are handled at multiple times during the day, providing a clean environment and early handling and stimulation. As they grow, we adapt, and at about 3 weeks they move to a larger one in the main living area. We begin training for cleanliness, introduce toys and food, and they start to explore their environment, learning how to play with Mom, with each other, with the other dogs in the house, and with humans. They learn through positive reinforcement: we encourage them to sit politely to get picked up, we work their recall, and they learn to sleep in a crate at night, so that the transition to their new homes is smoother... on everyone!
While our successes in show and performance can make it seem that MapleMyst is a breeding kennel focused exclusively on canine performance, many of our families enjoy less formal activities with their Lappies. Kielo has spent her summer on the water, hiking and participating in camping weekends with her owners Laura and Jesse. One thing is for certain, she is the Champion of their hearts!
And...just like that, little Chai (MapleMyst's Iced Chai Lappé, IBAR, NBAR, NTD) is 9 months old and looking more grown up than ever. Chai took Winners female and Best Puppy in Breed at the SD&G dog show on Friday August 22nd, for her 2 first points. Looking forward to future shows with this one!
Congratulations also go out to Stéphanie and Zyra (Ch. MapleMyst's Legendary Adventure) for their Best of Breed and Select wins during the weekend!
In early August at the Finnish Lapphund Club of Canada National Specialty, Kiire was honored to be awarded the Club’s Versatility Gold Award, recognizing her outstanding achievements in Agility, Ratting, Sprinter and other performance events. It is the 1st time ever that the FLCC bestows this award and we are very proud that Kiki is following in the pawsteps of her Mom, our foundation girl, Mysti. Congratulations also go out to Aila on her Versatility Bronze, to Musca on her Versatility Silver and to Kaya on her Versatility Excellent!
In early August, Jessica, Kaya and Manon travelled to the Finnish Lapphund Club of Canada Nationals taking place in Edmonton. The Specialty took place on August 8th. It was wonderful to see old friends and meet some new Lappy lovers. Lappy attendance was high for the Specialty, with 34 Finnish Lapphunds in the ring! Congratulations go out to all of the winners, and special mention to Jessica and Kaya for their Select win, as well as Taylor and Louie for their Award of Merit!
