At MapleMyst, our primary consideration in breeding and placing pups is the health and well-being of each puppy in our breeding program. Puppy placements are done on temperament first, then gender, then other secondary considerations such as color. We only breed Finnish Lapphunds, here in our peaceful Canadian home, and do not import dogs for sale. These are precious friends, not some fancy car from a foreign place, after all.
MapleMyst dogs are tested before breeding, as are the sires chosen for mating. Full testing for this breed includes hip and elbow x-rays for dysplasia, as well as a patella exam, eye exam and genetic testing for Pompes disease, Degenerative Myleopathy, PRA/PRCD (eye disease), Multifocal retinopathy, etc. These tests, not available a few years ago, are now very simple to administer and are helping inform our breeding choices. All MapleMyst puppies come with their CKC registration papers, microchip, and first health-check, first vaccines and preventive deworming. Additionally, we begin foundation training as early as 4 weeks, and pups will go to their new homes at least partially house-trained, with night training well underway. While the Finnish Lapphund is a highly intelligent and trainable breed, I do recommend that new owners follow formal training sessions for the first year of the puppy’s life, in order to forge the bonds that will remain throughout your dog’s life with you and your family.
